Omelets, pancakes, and fresh fruit are all served buffet-style on an outdoor terrace. Hotel Mary Carmen

I remember hanging out on Tortugas Beach, wishing I could take one of those cute little turtles home with me. Well, at Hotel Mary Carmen, you don't have to BYOT because they have their own. Each day, new hotel guests are greeted in the lobby by tortoises that freely roam the property. There is no swimming pool, but a shaded courtyard with seating area makes for a lovely evening outside...with tortoises, of course. The rooms are non-smoking with private bathrooms and complimentary Wi-Fi. There's a safety deposit box in every room so you can feel comfortable leaving your stuff behind while you explore the island. Rooms with 2 and 3 double beds are currently available at prices starting at an extra-low $44(for booking.com members). Membership is 100% free.

Casa Mexicana Cozumel

Casa Mexicana Cozumel is steps from the water, and you can wave to the cruise ships from the second-floor swimming pool. The first thing guests notice is how clean the place is. The courteous staff is always around to answer any questions or give their suggestions of stuff to do on the island. The rooms offer double beds and private balconies with either a city view or, for about $30 extra, a fantastic sea view. There's free Wi-Fi, cable TV, and toiletries. The rooms also have a fridge for keeping your drinks cold. There's an ironing station inside the rooms, as well as a hairdryer so you won't have to worry about packing one. Breakfast is located on-site and has many rave reviews online. It's a buffet-style meal on an open terrace. Pancakes, fruit, and eggs are served fresh, and it's all included in the price of your stay.

Hotel Plaza Cozumel

The Hotel Plaza Cozumel is situated among an array of different stores, including jewelry shops, clothing stores, cigar shops, and even a complete walk-in shopping mall around the corner. After a morning of shopping, relax by the outdoor swimming pool or head right across the street and hop on the ferry that takes you to Playa del Carmen. This hotel is also walking distance from several restaurants, bistros, bakeries, cafes, a pizzeria, and even a chocolate shop. The rooms are non-smoking with two double beds, free cable, Wi-Fi, and toiletries. Every morning, the housekeeping staff adds a hand-rolled towel animal to your bed for that extra bit of charm. As an added convenience, there is a currency exchange on-site, so you can easily switch between Pesos and U.S. Dollars while you're there. Two public-use computers are available in the lobby free of charge. Breakfast is also free and includes pastries, eggs, frijoles, and fruit. Don't miss the spectacular sunset view from the rooftop patio. You'll want to have your camera out and ready for that photo op.

Villa Segovia

If you're looking to stay somewhere a little cozier, Villa Segovia might be the perfect place. It is, in fact, an actual villa (Spanish-style mansion), complete with backyard swimming pool and multiple available bedrooms. The kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and living room are all at your disposal as well as the free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. The rooms are all non-smoking and the toiletries and ironing facilities are free to use. The rooms also have balconies that overlook the backyard pool, which is beautifully lit at night. Parking is available on-site, free of charge. The hotel is located a mile and a half from the airport and 5 minutes from the water. It sits right in the middle of downtown Cozumel, so pretty much everything is nearby. Live like royalty during your time on the island and pay only a fraction of the price here at Villa Segovia.

Beds Friends Hostel

I always like adding a BONUS to my lists because sometimes a place will stick out for one reason or another, and I think to myself, "It doesn't exactly fit, but people still HAVE to see this!" Well, this is one of those places. It's not quite a hotel, doesn't exactly include a FREE breakfast (it costs $3), and it is a little on the eccentric side. But the rates are dirt cheap, and it's only 2 blocks from the main shopping strip along the water. The Bed Friends Hostel offers the more-traditional bunk bed accommodations, as well as private rooms with private bathrooms. There's no swimming pool, but there is a large backyard with tables, lounge chairs, and a bar. Other guests will probably be hanging out back there under the shade of the trees or in a hammock. The parking and Wi-Fi are free, but the shuttle service is extra.
